Linear SS ⇒ IT-PIR
Statement
For a database , the client secret-shares its index : with two servers it picks a uniformly random and sends to one and to the other — an additive linear secret sharing of the characteristic vector of over — and each server returns the XOR of the database bits it indexes, so the XOR of the two answers is . Each server’s view is a uniformly random subset independent of , so privacy against each non-colluding server is perfect; this is information-theoretic two-server PIR with communication. Arranging as a -dimensional cube and sharing each coordinate separately gives servers with communication for constant , and a covering-code argument lets two servers simulate the scheme with communication — CGKS98.
Sketch
Linearity keeps the answers short: a server holding a share of the characteristic vector returns , and linear reconstruction applied to the answers gives ; XOR sharing is the case.
