Search LWE ⇒ Decision LWE

Standard model · Reg05 · security loss: polynomial: for a distinguisher of advantage the search algorithm runs in time , testing each of the guesses

Statement

Let be prime. If search LWE with parameters is hard for every polynomial number of samples, then decision LWE with the same is hard for every polynomial number of samples: an efficient distinguisher between and using samples yields an efficient algorithm that recovers from samples — Reg05. Sample-preserving search-to-decision reductions hold for a wide range of parameters: LWE samples are pseudorandom whenever search LWE is hard for the same — MM11b.

Sketch

To test the guess , map each sample to for the -th unit vector and fresh uniform ; the result is , LWE-distributed if and uniform otherwise, since is prime. Running the distinguisher on all pairs , polynomially many because , reads off . Beforehand, the self-reduction for uniform turns a distinguisher for uniform into one that works for every .

Notes

  • The converse holds for every modulus, given an error distribution with efficiently recognizable support and enough samples — folklore; see Decision LWE ⇒ Search LWE.
